Streaming Video/Audio Issues In Windows Media Player
I personally don’t have a ton of information on this subject and very few people report information in the Newsgroups. There is a bit of information below that might help you with stream video and audio in Windows Media Player. Here’s a bit that might help, if not I would post in the WMP Newsgroup with as much information as you can/. IF you don’t get much other help there then I would suggest contacting Product Support. If you do so, please post your solution after in the Newsgroups. This way the rest of the community will benefit.
Troubleshooting Steps
- Ensure you have the latest version of Windows Media Player
- Ensure you have all Windows Updates installed
- Disable any software firewalls and ensure that you don’t have a hardware firewall blocking the traffic for wmplayer.exe
- Take a look at this to ensure that WMP is correctly seeing your internet connection.
- If Windows Media Player crashes when you are trying to stream take a look at this and see if it helps.
- Adjust settings under Tools | Options | Network and Tools | Options | Performance
- Reinstall Internet Explorer - How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer
- Re-register wmnetmgr.dll - Start | Run | regsvr32 C:WINDOWSsystem32wmnetmgr.dll
- Reinstalling WMP can never hurt. Just run the install again, do not uninstall it first.
- Try playing the streaming media in mplayer2.exe (WMP 6.4) Start | Run | mplayer2.exe
Other Steps
- In Windows XP I have seen user profiles get corrupt (somehow) and give errors while trying to stream. Create a new account or log in as a different user and see what you get.
- If you are on a corporate or work computer you might be getting blocked from streaming media by a few different things. Talk with your admin about this.
- It has been noted that serveral third party “Codec Packs“ will cause problems while both trying to connect to and play streaming media. If you have installed any of these, sorry. Don't pirate software and don't install hacked codec's and you would have better luck.
